C4Real helps students prepare for the workplace

At C4Real, we believe it is important to invest in the future of our industry. Therefore, we support future 3D designers, art directors and motion designers.

After all, they are the ones who continue the profession that we have a great passion for. That is why we often work together with educational institutions such as the Saxion Hogeschool and the ROC van Twente. This collaboration goes beyond just supervising interns and graduates and bringing them into contact with the professional field. For example, our C4Real colleagues give various master classes. A good example is the joint involvement with BuROCee in Enschede.

BuROCee

In the past period we have been able to cooperate with students within BuROCee with great pleasure, within two extensive components; this was an initiative of ROC Twente. Here, media design gives students the opportunity to work with real clients on practical assignments linked to the industry. The twelve students we supervise come from various disciplines, where they took up the challenge to deepen or broaden their knowledge.

The assignments

Part of the project is that the students made an assignment for us.

Assignment 1: From storyboard to a 2D motion graphics animation with adobe Character Animator; The assignment was about animating a 2D character in Character Animator CC. The students examined the possibilities for character animation in this new application from Adobe Suite. In this program it is possible to animate real-time animation using controllers. Supporting the assignment, the students received a short storyboard and the production-related character assets.

Assignment 2: Create a short 3D animation based on STEP source models; The assignment that the students were given was to create a 3D animation based on existing 3D models of our client with the focus on the workflow. This is to simulate how making a 3D production usually takes place in practice. The students were free to choose their software and in how they shaped the animation. We will explain this assignment further on.

The acquaintance

In the introductions the students have become acquainted with the process we use in making our productions. Art director Chris Leenheer: "This gives them a good idea of what they can expect when they later go on to work for an employer. The students were therefore guided, among other things, by the pre-production process; the key step in creating animations. Here the customer's request is visually elaborated using, for example, a storyboard or a motion style guide. An important step in production because it becomes clear to the customer what he or she can expect as an end product".

Two weeks after the introduction, a master class was given, accompanied by Stefan Siderius Lead, 3D Designer at C4Real. Our Art Director Chris Leenheer was also present. During the masterclass, Stefan went through the steps of a 3D production and gave some useful tips for the proper execution of a BuROCee assignment. Subsequently, Stefan and Chris gave individual feedback on the work of the students.

Final presentations

Stefan Siderius: “The students were allowed to present their assignments at the end of the project. During the final presentations, we were pleasantly surprised with the results and the process that the students went through. Very nice to see was that some students, in addition to a nice end result, also used a storyboards to plan their animation before they started the final assignment. The students were also open to feedback and reflection, allowing them to learn optimally from this whole experience. We therefore look back at a successful project”.

C4Real will continue to be involved in BuROCee next year. The workforce of C4Real consists 100% of alumni of both Saxion Hogeschool and ROC Twente. The above is an example of one of the collaborations that we have with the various educational institutions. If you want to know more about this, please, feel free to contact us.
