How long does it take to make a 3D animation?

Are you considering having a 3D animation made?

The development of 3D animations is a modern graphic technique, in which animation videos with three-dimensional images are created. These types of animation videos often look very realistic. You also have the option to showcase a product (or prototype of a product) from the inside and outside and you can zoom in and out with the camera. So there can be many advantages to using a 3D animation, but this also means that creating the animation video is a fairly complex process that takes on average rather longer than developing other types of animations. In this article we discuss what is involved in making a 3D animation, how long this process takes on average and which factors influence the amount of time spent.

How is a 3D animation made?
There are several steps involved in creating a 3D animation. Often the first step is to make a storyboard. You can see this as the sketch phase of the final video. Sketched drawings are placed in sequence to get an idea of what the final movie will look like. When all the sketches are finished (and approved), modeling can begin. This part can take quite a while. In this phase, all sketches are made into three-dimensional models. When the modeling is completed, you still won't have a video because the images aren't moving yet. But you will have a good idea of what the final result will look like. Then the animation itself starts, whereby movement is added to the video. And eventually, all images are exported, at which point the animation can also be viewed as a moving video.

Because this is a fairly complex process, it can take a while before the animation video is completed. Several factors affect the duration of the manufacturing process. For that reason, it’s also not possible to give a clear-cut answer to the question of exactly how long it takes to complete the video (making a long, complex animation video can take up to six months). But in general, you can assume that it takes at least three to four weeks to develop a good animation video. If time is short, this is of course always something you can mention when you commission the work.

Factors affecting duration
There are several factors that influence the time it takes to develop a good 3D animation video. First of all, of course, the length of the video itself is important. Making a short video will, of course, take less time than making a long one. The complexity of the video also influences the duration of the process. If you want to process a lot of movement or details in the video, it will take more time. And finally, you can still have your say: during the process, you’ll be able to give feedback on the results. If you have a lot of feedback, it will take longer for the final result to be ready. Are you in a hurry? Then make sure you have a clear idea in advance of what exactly you want. This way the animators can get to work on your idea quickly and efficiently.
