Introduction to Thales SOTAS

Possibilities and developments in the technical field are moving at lightning speed, even in critical communication environments such as transportation and defence, the digital revolution is advancing rapidly. When driving a vehicle, short and quick communication should be established with people outside of the vehicle. In these situations it is important that you can understand each other well, that there is no interference or noise on the line and that you can trust that data will arrive safely and quickly at the receiver. With SOTAS, part of the French-Dutch radar and communication systems company Thales, these processes become more efficient and reliable and safety is ensured. Thales wanted to communicate the added value of its extensive product portfolio with the SOTAS line to the target audience through an impressive visual campaign, without getting too technical.

Making advanced technology understandable

Thales's objective was to showcase and market the added value of its extensive SOTAS portfolio to the target audience, by means of a fresh campaign, without being too technical.
Studio Director Rob Assink of C4Real: "We already have a great deal of experience in translating complicated technological products into comprehensible visualizations, but in this case there was a challenge to visualize the value of sound in an environment that, due to its sensitive nature, cannot be directly copied as it is in real life. The value that SOTAS provides must be made clear in an appropriate context for the Thales' customer."

Zooming out to the bigger story

The process

Andy Swiebel, Director of Marketing & Business Development at Thales, understands that Thales' market segments are not easy to understand quickly. "Our market segments are used to communicating in ways other than through 3D animations, so for us this was progressive. C4Real has read up our domain very well and quickly, researching what the common terms are in the business. They combined that well with their experience from other markets that are a bit more technical. For example, we often wanted to dive into technology quickly, but they advised us to zoom out first at important moments and to take in the bigger story before we went any deeper. There is a number of larger aspects that people also want to know, such as the advantages that SOTAS offers that are not just about functions or features."

Single Source Philosophy

The solution

In order to create this many products for an integrated campaign as efficiently as possible, C4Real works with a 'single source philosophy', where material can be reused for other forms of content. For the videos, we chose to create a landscape scenario of 3D animations with 2D graphics. From this, we created a 3D product model library of models and vehicles from which visuals and shorter animations were created. These products are used for brochures, presentation templates and trade show materials, so that all Thales' sales professionals worldwide can communicate to potential customers with the same story and in consistent style.

Impact

Andy Swiebel is pleased with the initial reactions: "We hear from our international colleagues and customers that they find it a very clear story. Internally, our colleagues also agree and think that a comprehensive and understandable picture is painted of what SOTAS provides in terms of value for the customer. Not only about the functions, but also about the total value from 'non-functionals'. We are now sharing the material with our global sales departments, where the new sales kit including these animations are used as much as possible in customer contact. We now have real supporting visuals with audio support that help to explain what SOTAS is and the benefits it offers a customer. With this, we ensure that every sales professional is sharing the same story. In addition, it is time consuming to travel around the world to do the story, and it is a great tool to use in social media campaigns. We can now approach a large group of people with relatively few resources and time. In doing so, we immediately show interested parties the added value of an integrated approach."
