The challenge: the recycling of a sports field in understandable language

Ten Cate Grass consists of a group of international manufacturers, suppliers and layers of synthetic turf and athletics tracks with a shared mission to create the best and most sustainable synthetic surfaces for the sports and leisure industry. When you talk about sustainability, you’re also talking recycling. Ten Cate Grass brought Ecocept® onto the market for recycling sports pitches. It is a bottom layer structure for sports fields that at the end of its lifecycle can be recycled to produce a new bottom layer structure. But how do you explain the recycling process to the target group in simple and understandable terms? C4Real came up with the solution: a 2D explainer animation.

How do you explain a complex story in an understandable way?

The solution: A 2D explainer animation

There is a lot involved in the recycling of a sports field. End-of-life material from sports fields must be collected, processed, harvested and reused in new material. It all seems simple, but it is quite a complicated process. We were also asked to conceive production in such a way that it would be understood internationally on top. The available budget also had its clear limit. C4Real came up with the solution in the form of a 2D explainer animation. A 2D explainer animation offers the possibility of clearly presenting a complex process in sound and picture.

Simplifying the story

The process

Process analysis. That is where it all starts. Optimally setting out the entire process so that all steps in the sports field recycling process are completely clear, and we ourselves also no longer have any questions. That is the basis. We then get down to translating the complex story into a simple and easy to understand version. We call this ‘simplifying the story’. We then use storyboards for the translation into images. Only then does it really become clear whether the production is also exactly as the customer intended. Adjustments are sometimes needed, sometimes they are not. When the total concept has been agreed we start on the production of the animation.

The added value of the 2D explainer animation

The end result

The end result is a clear 2D animation of the sports field recycling process. As a viewer you are carried along from the start to the end of the process. There are also the USPs of the new underlay construction: shock resistant, water permeable and energy regenerating. Icons from Ten Cate's library were used to visualise these USPs.

Stock music from existing loops was used as the music for a perfect match. Neither is the animation too long, so it can also be used on social media. By opting for a 2D explainer animation the likelihood of customers remembering the explanation is much greater, while this also benefits the brand awareness of Ten Cate Grass Ecocept®. The 2D animation has also been rebranded for Tiger Turf®, a joint venture of Ten Cate Grass.
